Well, actually I got two new cookbooks- but I’ve only cooked out of one so far.
And let me back up for a sec, the last few weeks have been a lot. I started a job and finished a job. I’ve picked up some part time and freelance work, and I’ve started a new writing project- Technicolor By Steph on Substack. (Stay tuned, I may move this blog to Substack… but then again, I may not). This and The Runner’s new found unemployment has led to interesting times in the He Runs, I Cook household.
I think we’re ok- we’re rolling with the punches and looking on the bright side, and working out what’s next but it’s been a bit crazy! This time around I’m doing the work to really think about what’s next- should I go back into a corporate job or is now the time to become a full time cookie lady? Do I have the hunger and hustle to start a consulting (or cookie) business? Only time will tell!
But cookies are a constant. And cookbooks are a constant. And nothing beats a good chocolate chip cookie or a good sugar cookie. This week’s new cookbook is America’s Test Kitchen, The Perfect Cookie.
The first two cookies I made were the Brown Sugar Cookie and The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies. The Brown Sugar Cookie was perfection. So good on every level. The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie was… a let down. You can’t call yourself “The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie” and not be, well perfect. It was too crunchy. It needed a glass of milk. It could be user error, maybe 13 minutes was too long to bake them? But honestly, I was disappointed. Thomas liked them though, so I guess that’s something.
I’m sticking wtih this cookbook again this week– Chocolate Sables and Chocolate Sugar Cookies are coming up!
It’s also the first week of school holidays- thinking of what cooking and baking projects we can do as a family!
