It must be hard being 9 years old and having a mother that is constantly trying to get you to eat cookies.  I mean it sounds like a pretty tough life.  Every week your mother makes different types of cookies, and every week they sit on the counter begging to be eaten.  You walk past them every day and she offers you some but yet you insist on eating packaged mini-Oreos and Arnott’s mini-chocolate chip cookies in your lunchbox.  Your friends come over, they occasionally try one- often they like it.  But yet, you turn your little nose up and take for granted that there are always home baked goods on offer in your house.

Every now and then, your little 9 year old mind gets curious and you’re swayed by a chocolate chip cookie.  You have one and decide it’s not too bad, maybe you have a second one but you’re not overly convinced.  You still go to Subway and ask for a cookie, your mother has even given up on saying “But we’ve got cookies at home.” Because she knows that no matter what, you’re not the kid that eats cookies.

Until this week.  Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers.  This is the week it finally happened.  Thomas has become a cookie fiend.  It started innocently enough.  I was volunteered to make cookies for his tennis team on Sunday, so I made three types of cookies- Christina Tosi’s Chipless Wonders (but with chips), Jesse Szewczyk’s Chewy triple spice sugar cookies and Sally Baking Addiction’s Sweet and Salty M&M and Pretzel cookies.  A good mix of plain, interesting and tasty cookies to suit most palates.  Another mom also brought cookies to tennis.  No comment needed.  I’ll just let that one sit.  Obviously, I was not the one who coordinated the snacks.  Anyhoooooooo….

Something magical happened, not only did I get quite a few compliments on my cookies, but I got probably the biggest compliment of all.  Thomas ate them.  And ate them.  And ate them.  I’m not sure how many he had at tennis, but he was gobbling them all the way home.  Apparently at some point during the day he had 8 cookies.  I don’t know if it’s 8 car cookies or 8 overall, but that is a milestone.  I mean, I felt slightly ill for him, and like a terrible mother.  (Who lets their 9 year old eat 8 cookies in one day?? Apparently me.)  I was thrilled and horrified, but mostly thrilled and happy he didn’t throw them back up.

Surprisingly, the triple spice ones were his favorite.  They are quite good but I was surprised that he chose those over the chocolate chips.  And he ate more during the week, and told his friend how good they were.  And asked for them in his lunch and ate them. Every day.

This might not seem like a cookie win, but it is.  Most kids love sweets, mine does not.  In fact, he didn’t want a birthday cake last year…I think he wanted his candles on burgers instead.  So the fact that he’s turned into a cookie kid overnight, makes me happy.  Hopefully one day he’ll appreciate that his mom baked cookies- but for this week, I’ll just take the win.
